V GQB Chembio Group Meeting, February 19-21, Granada- Spain.

Fernando Reyes and Ignacio Pérez-Victoria, from the Chemistry Department of MEDINA, attended the V GQB Chembio Group Meeting celebrated in Granada from the 19th to the 21st of February.

Both presented recent results on the combined use of NMR and other chemistry-based structural elucidation tools with biosynthetic gene cluster analysis for the structural determination of complex microbial natural products. Fernando commented in his talk how this approach was used in the determination of two different families of bioactive molecules discovered at MEDINA, the caniferolides, antifungal glycosylated macrolides isolated from a culture of the marine-derived actinomycete Streptomyces caniferus, and the krisynomycins, depsipeptides that act as potentiators of the antibiotic imipenem, isolated from Streptomyces canus. Ignacio presented in his poster additional details on the methodology applied to solve the structure of the caniferolides.
